Ultimate Dorm Essentials Checklist for College Students
Heading off to college is an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming trying to figure out what to pack for your dorm room. To make the process easier, we’ve put together a comprehensive checklist of dorm essentials to ensure you have everything you need to make your new space feel like home.
Starting with the basics, make sure you have extra-long twin sheets and blankets, a mattress pad, pillows, pillowcases, and a bedspread to make your bed cozy and comfortable. Don’t forget a bathroom tote, toiletries, shower shoes, towels, washcloths, detergent, fabric softener, and a laundry basket to keep your clothes clean and organized.
For your room, consider bringing an alarm clock, cleaning supplies, a vacuum, broom, plates, silverware, cups, bowls, dish soap, a waste basket (metal only), garbage bags, extension cords (if allowed), surge protectors (UL approved), school/desk supplies, a desk lamp, fan, and first aid items.
To add some personal touches to your dorm, consider bringing clothes, hangers, air freshener, an area rug, floor lamps, a coffee maker, television, laptop, headphones, removable adhesives (like 3M command hooks), under bed storage, and decorations like string lights, a hammock, and plants.
It’s important to note that there are some items that are not allowed in dorm rooms, such as pets (fish are the only exception), hot plates, personal fridges, alcohol/drug paraphernalia/hookah, space heaters, toaster ovens, candles/incense, weapons/firearms/knives, and more. Be sure to check your college’s specific rules and regulations before packing.
By following this checklist and being mindful of what you can and cannot bring, you’ll be well-prepared to set up your dorm room and make it a comfortable and welcoming space for the upcoming school year. Good luck with your college journey!
