NMU Entrepreneurship Course Supports Student Startups and Local Nonprofits

NMU Students Learn Entrepreneurship Through Real-World Business Startups

Entrepreneurship in Action: NMU Students Turn Ideas into Impactful Businesses

In the heart of Marquette, Michigan, the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and buzzing at Northern Michigan University (NMU). Thanks to Professor Corinne Bodeman’s innovative startup course, students are not just learning about business in the classroom; they are actively launching their own companies. Through a hands-on approach to entrepreneurship, these students are gaining invaluable experience while making a positive impact in their community.

Learning Through Doing

As the well-known adage goes, “experience is the best teacher.” This sentiment resonates deeply in Professor Bodeman’s startup class, where students are encouraged to conceptualize and create real businesses. The course provides a unique opportunity for students to engage in a fully immersive entrepreneurial journey. "It’s about much more than just making a profit," says Bodeman. "It’s about understanding how to identify customers, market effectively, and support local nonprofits in the process."

The journey begins with brainstorming an online product before deciding on a business idea and selecting one of seven local nonprofits to support. Students then set up their businesses legally by obtaining a DBA (Doing Business As) and opening a dedicated bank account. To help tide them over financially, they receive startup funds from NMU’s dean, who acts as a venture capitalist for the budding entrepreneurs. With four weeks left in the semester, the students are focused on bringing their businesses to life while simultaneously supporting their chosen causes.

Success Stories from the Classroom

Several exciting student-led businesses have emerged from this course, each with its own unique concept and mission.

Superior Hockey Skills and Drills

Joey Elmhirst co-founded Superior Hockey Skills and Drills, which provides training services for kids looking to hone their hockey skills. This venture supports Start the Cycle, a nonprofit aimed at nurturing young athletes.

Pawsitive Prints

Stephen Thomas is also making an impact with Pawsitive Prints, a business that crafts custom dog-themed stickers printed in Ishpeming. This adorable business is partnered with the U.P. K9 Training Group, promoting responsible pet ownership in the community.

Snackage

Chris Anderson and Ellie Barnes found a niche with Snackage, offering premade snack packages designed for easy drop-shipping to college dorms. Their chosen nonprofit, Project Jade, aligns with their commitment to support mental health initiatives.

Nature Knit

Kimberly Giese leads Nature Knit, a charming business that specializes in customizable beanies adorned with various themed patches. Supporting the Trillium House in Marquette, Nature Knit not only promotes creativity but also helps provide shelter for those in need.

UPStickers.Co

Lexi Hagan, along with her team, has created UPStickers.Co, a venture that produces custom stickers, mugs, and magnets featuring beloved pet images. They also support Imagination Factory Children’s Museum in Iron Mountain, igniting creativity in the younger generation.

Sustain a Home

Lastly, Sustain a Home rounds out the roster, offering a selection of eco-friendly home goods. This environmentally conscious company supports Room at the INN Warming Center in Marquette, playing a crucial role in addressing homelessness.

Building a Future of Impact

These student entrepreneurs are not only gaining critical business skills, but they are also embodying the spirit of community support. By tying their ventures to local nonprofits, they are learning how to balance profit with purpose. In doing so, they are contributing to meaningful causes, proving that business can be a force for good.
