Supporting Foster Youth: Move-in Day Mafia Transforms College Dorm Experiences for Former Foster Kids
The Move-in Day Mafia: A Heartwarming Initiative for Former Foster Kids
Moving into a college dorm is a rite of passage for many young adults, filled with excitement, anticipation, and a sense of newfound independence. However, for some, this moment can be overshadowed by the stark reality of navigating this transition without the support of family. Enter the Move-in Day Mafia, a nonprofit organization that is changing the game for former foster youth as they embark on their college journeys.
A Mission Born from Compassion
Founded in 2020 by TeeJ Mercer, the Move-in Day Mafia was inspired by a poignant encounter with a young woman who had just graduated from an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) after aging out of the foster care system. Mercer witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by these young adults when a social worker dropped her off at campus with little more than a few belongings. This moment ignited a passion in Mercer to ensure that no young person would have to face such a daunting transition alone.
"I just couldn’t imagine someone who’s 18 going through that transition alone," Mercer shared. "So, I resolved that I was going to do something about it."
Transforming Dorm Rooms into Homes
The Move-in Day Mafia is not just about moving boxes; it’s about creating a sense of belonging. Volunteers from the organization descend upon college campuses, transforming bare dorm rooms into personalized sanctuaries. For many of these students, this is the first room they can truly call their own, and the emotional impact is profound.
Mina Starks, who assists with the design aspect, explains, "We have a lot of students tell us that they’ve never even had their own room before. So, it’s really important that all the way down to the wallpapers, the headboards, their favorite colors, their inspirational quotes that they may like, those are just like the little bitty details we try to make sure that we execute in the rooms."
Beyond Move-in Day: Ongoing Support
The support provided by the Move-in Day Mafia extends far beyond the initial move-in. The organization continues to nurture these students throughout their college experience with monthly care packages filled with essential items like food and school supplies. This holistic approach ensures that students can focus on their studies without the added stress of basic necessities.
As the organization grows, it aims to expand its reach to more HBCU campuses across the country. However, this ambitious goal requires increased funding and volunteers to sustain its impactful work.
Celebrating Success
Last spring marked a significant milestone for the Move-in Day Mafia as they celebrated their first-ever graduate. This summer, they aim to assist 44 more young scholars in starting their college journeys. "We’ve seen that these kids thrive when they’re not under the stress of buying deodorant, buying toothpaste, and buying detergent," Mercer noted, highlighting the importance of alleviating everyday burdens.
How You Can Help
The Move-in Day Mafia is always looking for compassionate individuals who want to make a difference. Whether you can donate your time, resources, or funds, your support can help ensure that these young adults have the best possible start to their college experience.
