REO Speedwagon Returns to Their Roots: A Nostalgic Visit to the University of Illinois
Last week, the iconic rock band REO Speedwagon made a heartfelt return to where it all began—the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Founding members Neal Doughty and Alan Gratzer, along with former bassist Bruce Hall, took a trip down memory lane, revisiting their old dorm rooms in Townsend Hall. This nostalgic journey was part of the "Honoring the Legacy of REO Speedwagon" event, celebrating the band’s rich history and connection to the university.
Where Are REO Speedwagon Members’ Dorm Rooms?
The University of Illinois has a proud tradition of honoring its notable alumni. Gold plates adorn the doors of dorm rooms once occupied by famous figures like actor Nick Offerman, NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus, and financial guru Suze Orman. Among these honored alumni are Doughty and Gratzer, whose musical journey began in the mid-1960s while they were students.
Gratzer, who was studying aeronautical engineering at the time, humorously recalled his struggles with academics: "Between chemistry and physics, I didn’t have a clue. I went for five semesters and changed majors every semester. All I wanted to do was play rock and roll." Today, you can find gold plates outside their former dorm rooms—Doughty’s plaque hangs outside room 250, while Gratzer’s is just a few steps away at room 252.
A Trip Back in Time
The trio’s visit was not just about nostalgia; it was a celebration of their musical legacy. They participated in various activities leading up to the event, including a stop at the building that once housed Vriner’s Confectionery, featured on the back cover of their 1972 album, R.E.O./T.W.O. Doughty remarked, "They’ve got us busy. I think they’re even making a documentary about the whole thing. It’s the most work I’ve done in one week (for quite a while)."
The event at the State Farm Center also featured other former members, including Terry Luttrell, Mike Murphy, and Steve Scorfina, making it a memorable reunion for fans and band members alike.
